Der Konjunktor und gehört zu den frequentesten Sprachmitteln des Deutschen. Seine grundlegende Rolle liegt darin begründet, dass er Koordination, ein elementares Verfahren der komplexen Strukturbildung, realisiert. In der Untersuchung wird die These belegt, dass mit der Elementarität von und dessen breites Verwendungsspektrum einhergeht. Charakteristisch für und ist, dass es die wenigsten syntaktischen und semantischen Restriktionen aller Konjunktoren hat. Eine syntaktische und semantische Beschreibung – wie sie in traditionellen Darstellungen vorgenommen wird – wird seiner Funktion nicht gerecht. Deswegen wird ein funktional-pragmatischer Zugang eröffnet, der eine an Handlungskonstellation und Hörerverarbeitung orientierte Erfassung des breiten Verwendungsspielraums bietet. Eine funktional-pragmatische Darstellung setzt beim Hörer an, der in produktionsorientierten Grammatiken unberücksichtigt bleibt. Hörer sind nicht bloß sprachmächtige Subjekte, sondern wissende, mitdenkende und mithandelnde Menschen. Als Basisfunktion, die inhärent mit allen Verwendungsweisen verbunden ist, wird das beim Hörer ausgelöste Weiterund Zusammendenken herausgearbeitet. Mittels und werden beim Hörer also komplexe mentale Prozesse hervorgerufen.

The conjunction und is one of the most common words in the German language. Its basic role is to realise co-ordination, an elementary process in the formation of complex structures. The study shows that the elementary nature of und is connected with of its wide range of uses. It is characteristic of und that it has the lowest number of syntactic and semantic constraints of all conjunctions. A syntactic and semantic description – typical of traditional accounts – is not appropriate for its function. Therefore the study uses a functional-pragmatic approach, which offers a combination of action and hearer-oriented processing and captures the wide range of uses of und. A functional-pragmatic description takes the listener as its starting point, an aspect which is not taken into account in production-oriented grammars. Listeners are not just linguistically competent subjects, but knowledgeable, thinking and active participants in the interaction. A basic function inherently associated with all uses of und is the process of looking ahead and thinking along with the speaker which is triggered in the listener. Thus it can be shown that und induces complex mental processes in the listener.
